Greywacke is a special stone and a landmark of Lindlar. Discover its origins.

390 million years ago, when the Bergisches Land was still on the coast of a tropical sea, sand deposits and high pressure created a stone in Lindlar that has made the town famous worldwide over the past centuries. Lindlar greywacke is still quarried on the Brungerst mountain today. The stone can be found as floor tiles in Dubai as well as in a lounge at Frankfurt Airport or cut wafer-thin in the bathroom of Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich's yacht.

The newly created "Steinhauerpfad" (Stonecutters' Trail) follows in the footsteps of the people who have been quarrying and processing the stone for centuries, from the center of Lindlar up to the quarries on the Brungerst. Along the way, you can discover historic buildings and monuments made of greywacke, which bear witness to the craftsmanship of Lindlar's stonemasons. On the mountain, the stonemason's trail offers insights into abandoned quarries of past centuries and today's quarry operations. It also introduces the former Lindlar railroad station, to which the stones were transported from Brungerst via an ingenious braking track.

On the 6.2-kilometre circular trail, hikers not only learn a lot about the origins of Lindlar greywacke, but also about the life of the stonemasons, the dangers of working in the quarry and the guild in which the workers formed a strong community early on.

Lindlar is a stage of the "Bergischer Panoramasteig".

The trail has a total of 8 information boards and 2 audio stations. We would like to thank Christoph Scherer, who looks after the trail as a volunteer trail patron. There is a small plaque with a QR code at the start information board on the Steinhauerpfad, which takes you directly to a quiz. All you need to do to take part is scan the QR code.
