Bevertalsperre (lake)

Short facts

  • Hückeswagen

One of the many reservoirs in the Bergisches Land region, a popular place to cool off in summer.

Because of its attractive location in the Bergisch landscape, the Bevertalsperre reservoir is not just popular with amateur sports enthusiasts, cyclists and watersports fans, in good weather it also provides the opportunity to jump into the cool waters, sunbathe on the banks of the many coves or set up camp at one of the ideally located campsites and enjoy the idyllic surroundings. You can swim at Zornigen Ameise, Campsites I and II and at Käfernberg (see download).

Bevertalsperre is the oldest service water reservoir and was built from 1896 to 1898. To be more precise, the old Bevertalsperre reservoir was built during these years. It had a capacity of 3.3 million cubic metres and provided Wuppertal’s industrial sector with service water.

Today, Bevertalsperre is primarily used for the purpose of maintaining the minimum water level of the Wupper and as flood protection. It was built between 1935 and 1938 and went into operation in 1938. It is connected to the Neye and Schevelinger valley reservoirs by tunnels. Together they form the so-called “Beverblock”. The facility has a storage area of 200 ha, a storage depth of 31.5 m and a storage capacity of 23.7 million m3.
