stage 6: Altenberg - Bensberg (18.2 km, 5-6 hours
On the way from Altenberg Cathedral to the Baroque castle once furnished by Elector Palatine Johann Wilhelm II in Bensberg, this stage leads through a varied landscape with numerous views over the Bergisches Land and the Bay of Cologne. Along the way, a detour to the source of the Strunde beckons. Known as the “most diligent stream in the Bergisches Land” it powered more than 40 mills on its way to the Rhine. Some of these were operated as paper mills and established Bergish Gladbach’s reputation as the paper town.
