stage 5: Burg-Altenberg (27.6 km, 9 hours)

This stage leads to the "cradle of the Bergisches Land": The castle of the Count of Berg, who gave the region it’s name, once stood in Altenberg. Today, the former Altenberg Cistercian church - the “Bergisch Cathedral” - is particularly impressive. The route there runs through the Wupper valley. One of the oldest drinking water reservoirs in Germany is also by the wayside along with old grinding stones and the enchanted Lambertsmühle (Lambert's Mill) near Burscheid. In addition to this, a detour to Leichlingen beckons. Known as the blossom town, it’s surrounding areas are considered to be the “fruit loft of the Bergisches Land".
